TUSCALOOSA, Ala., – The second day of the SEC-Big 12 Challenge saw Mississippi State’s men’s tennis team add two more wins to their conference tally.
Freshmen Benito Sanchez Martinez and Petar Jovanovic each picked up a singles victory on Saturday to bring the Bulldogs’ total to six during the tournament.
Sanchez secured a 6-2, 6-4 straight-set win over Tyler Stewart of Texas Tech. Jovanovic battled back from being shutout in his opening set by South Carolina’s Lucas Da Silva to take the second set 6-3. The Montenegro native was able to outlast his SEC counterpart 7-5 in the third set to remain unbeaten in singles at the event.
Jovanovic and Sanchez Martinez were unable to have the same success as a doubles tandem, falling 6-1 to the Red Raider team of Stewart and Sebastian Abboud.
Gregor Ramskogler claimed a 6-4 win in his opening set against Oklahoma’s Justin Schlageter. But Schlageter fought back to take the next two sets by 6-2 scores to come out on top.
Patrick Lazo also lost his singles match against Abboud 6-2, 6-2.
State take the courts on Sunday for the final time this fall as the Bulldogs battle Oklahoma at 10 a.m.
