SEATTLE – Washington women’s tennis starts the first phase of postseason play this Thursday, heading back to Ojai, Calif. for the annual Pac-12 Championships. The Huskies have earned the No. 4 overall seed, their second-highest seeding in the tournament’s six-year history and will open up against the No. 5-seed UCLA Bruins bright and early at 9 a.m. at the Weil Tennis Academy.

By virtue of their 6-4 Pac-12 regular season record, the Huskies (16-7) bypassed the first round and will start off in the quarterfinals for just the second time, the other being in 2019 when the Huskies were the No. 3 seed, and reached the semifinals for UW’s best finish at the championships. Prior to 2017, the tournament was an individual event.

Stanford enters the tournament as the top-seed as the regular season champion, followed by No. 2 California, and No. 3 Arizona State. Matches between the six through 11 seeds start today, Apr. 26.

The Huskies, ranked 23rd in the latest ITA poll, will be trying to make a run and build momentum for the upcoming NCAA Championships. The NCAA Selection Show is just a few days away, on Monday, May 1, at 3 p.m. Pacific time on NCAA.com.

The Huskies outlasted the Bruins, 4-3, in their previous meeting this season at the Nordstrom Tennis Center. The Huskies won the doubles point and then got singles wins from Astrid Olsen, Jennifer Kerr, and Melissa Sakar, with Sakar clinching the win at the five spot.

UCLA has since upped its ranking to 20th, and the Bruins are led by 14th-ranked Fangran Tien and 115th-ranked Kimmi Hance. Hance and Elise Wagle are the fourth-ranked doubles team in the nation.
