THE FLATS – Georgia Tech women’s tennis was well represented on Monday when the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) announced the 2022 All-America teams. The Yellow Jackets placed two doubles teams on the list with Carol Lee and Kate Sharabura – a top 10-ranked doubles team – and Kylie Bilchev and Ava Hrastar – who reached the NCAA Championship quarterfinals.
With two doubles teams earning the honor, Georgia Tech is the only institution to place multiple doubles tandems on the women’s All-America list. A total of 15 doubles teams earned the recognition with seven hailing from the Atlantic Coast Conference. This marks the first time in program history Georgia Tech has had two doubles teams earn All-America recognition in the same season.
“I am so happy for each of the young ladies who achieved All-American status this year,” commented Byers Women’s Tennis Head Coach Rodney Harmon. “It is an amazing accomplishment that we have four All-Americans this year. They have all worked so hard this year to earn this recognition.”
Leading Georgia Tech from the No. 1 doubles position, Lee and Sharabura compiled a 22-6 overall record, including a 17-3 dual mark. The pair went 9-3 in ACC action and 11-3 from the top doubles position.
Lee and Sharabura broke into the ITA national rankings in February and steadily climbed the polls, becoming a top-10 team at No. 9 on March 23. They earned All-America status after receiving the No. 4 seed in the NCAA Championship and finished the season ranked No. 5 nationally.
Earlier today, Sharabura was also named the ITA Southeast Region Rookie of the Year when regional awards were announced by the organization. In her inaugural season on The Flats, Sharabura went 24-6 overall in doubles and 16-11 in singles. She was tabbed the ACC Freshman of the Week in January after a successful weekend at the Carolina Kickoff.
Tech’s doubles team of Bilchev and Hrastar went 21-10 overall this season and 12-8 in dual play. Bilchev and Hrastar rose as high as No. 13 in the ITA polls and finished the season ranked No. 21.
The Jackets, who competed mainly at the No. 2 position, earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Doubles Championship. The pair defeated two nationally-ranked doubles teams to reach the quarterfinals and garner All-America honors.
