Fontenel’s Career Day Helps No. 25 Sun Devils Sweep Baylor

TEMPE, Ariz. – Freshman Chelsea Fontenel continues to make her presence felt for the No. 25 Sun Devils (9-2, 0-0) this spring.

With Giulia Morlet, the Sun Devils’ regular on singles Court 1, nursing an ankle injury, the rookie Fontenel stepped up and delivered. She topped Baylor’s No. 94 Isabella Harvison (7-6, 6-3) in her debut atop the Sun Devil lineup. 

It also secured the team’s decisive fourth point, clinching a 4-0 win over the No. 46 Bears on Saturday afternoon at the Whiteman Tennis Center. It’s the Sun Devils’ seventh sweep already this spring.

Fontenel added her 10th win of the spring, as she’s tied with Marianna Argyrokastriti for the team lead.

Fontenel clinched the sweep, but solid play by Rachel Hanford, Marianna Argyrokastriti and two doubles pairs helped the Sun Devils get there.

Argyrokastriti and Fontenel teamed up for a 6-4 win on Court 3 moments after Sedona Gallagher/Hanford shut out the Bears on Court 2, 6-0. In 11 matches so far this season, the Sun Devils have won the doubles point 10 times.
