Florida tennis grabbed multiple wins in both singles and doubles play this weekend at the UNLV run tournament. The Gators time in Las Vegas marks the beginning of their 2024 spring season.
LAS VEGAS, NV. – The No. 10 Gators opened up their 2024 spring season this weekend at the Freeman Memorial Tournament. Florida competed against top players from several universities: No. 6 Oklahoma State, No. 8 Pepperdine, No. 16 UCLA, and UNLV.
After three days of play the Gators secured seven singles and four doubles wins. In the singles category, Carly Briggs led the Gators with two wins, defeating opponents from UCLA and UNLV. Malwina Rowinska, Sara Dahlstrom, Bente Spee, Qavia Lopez, and Alicia Dudeney also picked up singles wins over the past three days.
On the doubles side of the Freeman Memorial Tournament, Florida’s Sara Dahlstrom and Sophie Williams were paired up for their first time this season. The duo went on to defeat Aura Fang/Nikol Mircheva of UNLV (6-3), and Nikki Redelijk/Vivian Yang of Pepperdine (6-1). Other doubles wins came from freshman pair Malwina Rowniska/Qavia Lopez and Alicia Dudeney/Bente Spee.
Head Coach Roland Thornqvist comments on the of, “we got exactly what we wanted out of this weekend. Great competition– we learned what we do well and what we must improve on in our quest for trophies this spring. We will be ready for the season opener vs Baylor Saturday.”
The Gators will take the week to prepare for hosting Baylor next weekend at Alfred A. Ring Tennis Complex. The dual matchup will start at 1 p.m. and is free admission for all.
