GAINSEVILLE, Fla. – The Florida men’s tennis team posted another double-digit day of wins on day two of the Gator Fall Invite at the Alfred A. Ring Tennis Complex.
After getting a bye in the first round on day one, No. 91 Nate Bonetto came ready to play. The sophomore posted a straight-set win over Miami’s Antonio Prat 6-4, 7-5 to start things off and next took on No. 49 Hunter Heck from Illinois. The battle between the two ranked players lived up to expectations. Heck jumped out to a 6-3 first, but Bonetto responded with a 6-3 set of his own in the second. It was all Bonetto in the third frame, as the Bend, Ore. native raced past Heck 6-1 for his first top-50 win of the season and second of his career.
Jonah Braswell made it look easy against SEC-foe Josh Raab from Auburn, as the freshman dropped only three games in his 6-2, 6-1 victory. From there, Braswell had to meet fellow Gator Togan Tokac and won 6-2, 6-3.
No. 34 Axel Nefve made quick work of Miami’s Franco Aubone in straights 6-3, 6-0. Another all-Gator matchup took place between Nefve and Lukas Greif with the former being the victor 6-4, 6-4.
Will Grant had an impressive Saturday dealing a pair of straight-set victories. Another Auburn Tiger fell at the hands of the Gators with Grant marching by Raul Dobai 6-3, 6-3. The junior met Duke’s Connor Krug and dealt another victory in straights 6-4, 7-6 (4).
Tanapatt Nirundorn tallied his second singles win of the tournament after beating Auburn’s Dobai 6-1, 6-4 and became the second Gator to beat Dobai. Greif put up a hard-fought match against Duke’s Andrew Dale and edged the Blue Devil 7-6 (6), 7-5. Tokac also won in straights convincingly defeating UNF’s Jonas Hartenstein 6-1, 6-4.
The doubles competition begins the final day of the Gator Fall Invite tomorrow and will showcase an all-Gators affair with Bonetto/Nefve playing Braswell/Greif. Nirundorn/Tokac will face No. 24 ranked pair Lleyton Cronje/Bogdan Pavel from UCF.
A final round of singles will conclude the tournament and a Gators versus Gators final will be on display in both singles brackets. No. 91 Nate Bonetto and Jonah Braswell square off, while Will Grant and No. 34 Axel Nefve meet as well.
