SEATTLE, Wash.– The Gators faced the University of Georgia in Saturday morning’s consolation match at ITA Indoor Nationals. Florida was unable to recover from losing their rhythm in doubles and loss 1-4 to the Bulldogs.
On the doubles side Alicia Dudeney and Bentee Spee put up a strong effort but ultimately fell to Georgia’s Aysegul Mert/Dasha Vidmanova 6-3. The Bulldogs claimed the doubles point despite a hard-fought battle from freshman pair Qavia Lopez/Malwina Rowinska. The pair dropped 6-4 against Guillermina Grant / Mai Nirundron.
Entering singles 0-1, Florida attempted to regain their momentum. Dudeney was unable to secure a victory against Grant in a 1-6,1-6 loss. Gators freshman Qavia Lopez defeated Nirundorn 6-4,6-1 and notched the only point for Florida.
No.67 Carly Briggs fought hard but could not overcome No.38 Vidmanova in singles, with a final score of 2-6,0-6. Sara Dahlstrom was unable to clinch a victory against Anastasiia Lopata in the singles match, falling 2-6,3-6. The remaining matches went unfinished although Rachel Gailis was well on her way to a win over Vecic taking the first set 7-6 and leading 2-0 before the match ended.
HEAD COACH ROLAND THORNQVIST SAID:
“Another tough and difficult match against a top 7 team. We are fighting hard but coming up short but the important thing for us is to keep our eyes on the long term. As we keep battling and get healthy as a group, these matches, although hurtful now, will ultimately help us be the best we can be for the long SEC slate.”
