Florida Drops Match Against No.21 Texas A&M


COLLEGE STATION, TX. – No.19 Florida dropped Sunday’s match against No.21 Texas A&M at the Mitchell Tennis Center. The Gators fell 4-0 and moved to 5-6 overall and 1-1 in SEC action.
 
Florida opened the match securing the first doubles match with duo Carly Briggs/Rachel Gailis  defeating Sydney Fitch/Nicole Khirin 6-2. Texas A&M snagged the second match 6-1, after Alicia Dudeney/Bente Spee dropped to Jeanette Mireles/Lucciana Perez. The Aggies were able to clinch the doubles point in the final match with freshman Qavia Lopez/Malwina falling to No.4 Mary Stoiana/Mia Kupres 6-2. Texas A&M led 1-0 going into singles.
 
The Gators fought a difficult battle on the singles side. Carly Briggs dropped her match against Nicole Khirin. No.19 Khirin defeated No.57 Briggs 6-1,6-2 in the first completed match of the day. First year Gator, Malwina Rowinksa faced Jeanette Mireles and fell 6-3,6-2.
 
Things started to look up for the Gators when Qavia Lopez snagged the first win of the match for Florida. Lopez defeated Daria Smetannikov 6-4,6-2 in straight sets. The freshman moved to 6-1 overall in singles and 2-0 in conference play.
 
Alicia Dudeney tallied another win for the Gators, defeating Lucciana Perez 6-4,6-3. With Dudeney’s win in College Station she moved to a 6-4 singles record, going 2-0 in conference play.
 
With singles wins from Qavia Lopez and Alicia Dudeney, the score stood at 3-2 with two matches still out.
 
Sara Dahlstrom faced No.29 Mia Kupres in an intense back and forth battle on court three. Dahlstrom took the first set 7-5 but was defeated in the second 6-2. Sara clinched the third set 6-2, securing her first conference win of the season.
 
Lastly, No.40 Rachel Gailis fell to No.1 Mary Stoiana 6-4, 6-4. Gailis was faced with a tall task playing the first ranked player in the country, but she proved her ability to compete, securing eight games off Stoiana. Despite the comeback effort, Florida fell 4-3 on the road to the Aggies.
