CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Florida women’s tennis secured five singles victories and a doubles win on day one of the Miami Fall Invitational on Friday.
Carly Briggs claimed the first singles victory for the Orange & Blue, cruising to a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Northwestern’s Sydney Pratt. Freshman Rachel Gailis also took care of business, taking down Christina Hand of the Wildcats: 6-4, 7-5. Bente Spee and Emily De Oliveira each earned victories over Northwestern athletes, taking down Briana Crowley (6-2, 6-1) and Kiley Rabjohns (6-2, 5-7, 6-2), respectively.
In a head-to-head style singles competition, freshman Sophie Williams was impressive against Aino Alkio, winning in convincing fashion: 6-1, 6-2. With the singles victories secured, the Gators ended the day with a 5-3 advantage in singles competition over Northwestern.
On the doubles side of competition, Sara Dahlstrom and Williams secured the lone win for Florida, outlasting Barry’s Xiyao Wang and Daniela Farfan in a tiebreaker: 7-6(4).
Competition at the Miami Fall Invite is set to resume on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. ET with the Gators taking on Northwestern in doubles, followed by singles competition against Kentucky.
