Fighting Illini Women's Tennis Set for Home-Opening Weekend


CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Fighting Illini women’s tennis hosts their first two home dual matches of the season as Georgia Tech and Notre Dame are set to visit for Friday and Sunday matches, respectively. Illinois (2-1) will play Georgia Tech (2-1) on Friday at 4 p.m. CT and then face Notre Dame (5-1) on Sunday at 11 a.m. 

Last Time Out

The Illini came away with a split last weekend at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend. The Orange and Blue fell to No. 3 NC State before earning a 4-0 sweep of Furmna.

Illini vs. The Field

Illinois has played Georgia Tech once, falling short in 2007 to a then No. 1 Georgia Tech team by a 7-0 decision.

Against Notre Dame, the Illini trail the all-time series 9-29, but the last time these two sides faced in 2019, Illinois came out on top with a 4-3 victory over the Fighting Irish.

Illini Notes

Head coach Evan Clark is in his eighth year as the head coach of Illinois women’s tennis and holds an overall dual record of 98-67 (.594) and is 50-25 (.667) in Big Ten play during his time as an Illini.

The Illini are coming off a 16-9 season with an 8-3 Big Ten record in 2021-22.

Illinois returns seven of its eight players from last season, including seniors Emily Casati, Josie Frazier, and Ashley Yeah; junior Kate Duong; and sophomores Kida Ferrari, Megan Heuser, and Kasia Treiber. The Illini also welcomed new freshman Violeta Martinez to the squad. All eight Illini will travel for the match.

Former student-athlete Alexis Casati is the associate head coach at Georgia Tech and sister of current Illini Emily Casati.

Both Georgia Tech and Notre Dame are receiving votes in the latest ITA rankings.
