Fighting Illini Sweep Indiana to Open Senior Weekend

URBANA, Ill. – Kate Duong and Violeta Martinez returned to the courts on Friday as Illinois earned a 4-0 sweep over Indiana. Illinois climbed to 10-1 on its home courts this season with the victory.

Illinois improved to 14-7 overall with the victory including a 6-2 mark in Big Ten matches. Indiana dropped to 6-17 on the season and 0-9 in league play.

With the win, Illinois is now 5-1 against the Hoosiers under head coach Evan Clark. The contest marked the first between Illinois and Indiana since the 2021 dual season.

Illinois clinched its 13th doubles point of the season on Friday over Indiana, which also marked the sixth doubles tally over a Big Ten opponent of the campaign.

Kasia Treiber and McKenna Schaefbauer moved up to No. 2 doubles and made quick work of their Hoosier counterparts, 6-2. Despite IU striking for the first game, Illinois took a 2-1 lead. Then, from the 2-2 tie, the Illini duo won their next four games to climb to a record of 7-1 overall on the season and in Big Ten play.

Indiana grabbed a 6-4 win at No. 1 doubles before the newly formed Illini duo of Kate Duong and Alice Xu battled to a 7-5 win at No. 3 doubles to clinch the opening point for Illinois.

On the singles courts, Xu was the first completed as she earned a 6-4, 6-2 victory at No. 6. Xu is up to 11-4 on the season, 7-0 in dual play, and 6-0 in Big Ten action.

From the opposite end of Atkins Tennis Center, Kida Ferrari won the next match finished, 7-5, 6-2. In the first set, the junior trailed 4-5 before winning three straight games to claim the opening frame. Ferrari would never trail in the second set as she climbed to 11-6…
