Fall Season Opens at Furman – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – This weekend, four members of the Ohio State women’s tennis team will head to Greenville, S.C., for the 35th Annual Debbie Southern Furman Fall Classic. It is an individual tournament, with flights in singles and doubles.

Play will start at 9 a.m. each day. Friday will include two rounds of doubles and one round of singles, with Saturday featuring one round of each and the final singles round set for Sunday.

Ohio State will be joined by players from Furman, North Carolina, Vanderbilt, Wake Forest, Mississippi State, Duke, South Carolina, Georgia Tech and Clemson.

For the Buckeyes, Shelly Bereznyak is in Flight 1, Madeline Atway is in Flight 4, Kathleen Jones is in Flight 6 and Dani Schoenly is in Flight 9. In doubles, Bereznyak and Jones are in Flight 2, with Atway and Schoenly in Flight 3.

Buckeye This and That

• Of the Buckeyes competing this week, Kathleen Jones is a senior, Madeline Atway is a junior and Shelly Bereznyak and Dani Schoenly are both sophomores. Jones, Atway and Schoenly are all from Central Ohio, while Bereznyak is from Bat Yam, Israel. Bereznyak and Schoenly made their collegiate debuts in the Furman tournament last season.
• Ohio State had four singles players and two doubles teams listed in the first ITA rankings of the season. In singles, Irina Cantos Siemers was 10th, with Isabelle Boulais No. 37, Sydni Ratliff No. 51 and Akanksha Bhan No. 87. Cantos Siemers and Ratliff were 24th in doubles, with Boulais and Kolie Allen No. 32.
• The Buckeyes are the defending Big Ten regular season champion and were 21-6 overall last season, hosting NCAA Tournament matches and finishing the year ranked 15th. The squad returns nine players from last year’s roster and has added three standouts, with two graduate transfers and a freshman.

 Looking Ahead

• Select Buckeyes will travel to Raleigh, N.C., for the Fall Spotlight Sept. 22-25 and to Cary, N.C., for the ITA All-American Championships Oct. 1-9.
• 14-16, Ohio State will host the Buckeye Invite, welcoming teams for three days of singles and doubles action.
