El Sayed Starts at the ITA All-American Championships

CARY, N.C. – Aya El Sayed began play at the ITA All-American Championships Saturday morning at the Cary Tennis Park in pre-qualifying matches.

El Sayed started action against Theadora Rabman a freshman from North Carolina. Rabman came into college considered a blue-chip recruit and the No. 1 player from New York in the class of 2023. With all of that El Sayed knew she was going to have a tough match on her hands.

Early on in the first set it was a back-and-forth affair with neither player pulling away. As the set drew to a close El Sayed could not hold on, dropping the first set 6-4. In the next set Rabman pulled away and El Sayed was not able to keep up falling 6-2 to close out the match.

“Tough result for Aya [El Sayed] today,” head coach Anthony Pham commented. “She created a lot of opportunities today but unfortunately wasn’t able to capitalize on enough of them, credit to her opponent. We look forward to making some adjustments and getting after it tomorrow.”

With the loss, El Sayed will return tomorrow in the consolation side of the bracket. She will play at 10 a.m. against another ACC opponent Luliia Bryzgalova from Duke in her only match of the day.

Action continues in Fort Collins at the Colorado State Invite for the third and final day for Willow Gretch, Anya Nelson, and Ellen Puzak.
