Duke Wraps Up Fall Opening Weekend Action


DURHAM – Duke women’s tennis wrapped up the opening weekend of its fall campaign after split squads concluded action in the Debbie Southern Furman Fall Classic and Kitty Harrison Invitational on Sunday.

In Greenville, S.C., at the Debbie Southern Furman Fall Classic, junior Ellie Coleman went up against NC State’s Millie Rajecki in singles play, but dropped in straight sets 6-1, 6-3. Freshman Shavit Kimchi battled sixth-ranked Dasha Vidmanova of Georgia in the championship bracket, but fell in a 6-4, 6-2 decision.

The graduate student duo of Brianna Shvets and Iuliia Bryzgalova went undefeated on the final day of the Kitty Harrison Invitational in Chapel Hill, N.C., after registering wins in singles and a tightly-contested

doubles match.

In singles action, No. 111 Shvets registered a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Charlotte’s Ruxi Schech, while Bryzgalova powered past Auburn’s Ava Esposito Cogan, 6-4, 7-5. As a pair, Shvets and Bryzgalova put together a tremendous effort to defeat Rosie Garcia Gross and Taylor Cataldi of Wisconsin in a hard-fought battle, 8-7 (8).

Junior Emma Jackson, ranked 36th-nationally, competed alongside Shvets and Bryzgalova in the Kitty Harrison Invitational, but dropped her match against No. 114 Lucia Quiterio of Charlotte, 7-6, 6-4, to close out the competition.

The Blue Devils are back in action Friday as they compete in the USTA Fall Ranked Spotlight in Cary, N.C.
