Duke, Virginia Share Final 2024 Women's Tennis Weekly Awards

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – Virginia Annabelle Xu was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Week, while her teammates Elaine Chervinsky and Mélodie Collard earned their third Doubles Team of the Week honor of the season. Duke’s Shavit Kimchi was named the Freshman of the Week for second straight and fifth time this season.

Xu picked up the highest ranked win of her career over the weekend to help Virginia secure a pair of wins over Miami and Florida State. The sophomore from Montreal, Quebec, Canada, fought to a three-set victory over Miami’s No. 9 Alexa Noel at the No. 1 single spot. Then-ranked No. 95 in the nation, Xu recovered from a 6-0 loss in the second set to take the 10-point third-set tiebreaker for the 6-2, 0-6, 10-7 win. She jumped 34 spots to rank No. 61 in the latest ITA rankings.

Chervinsky and Collard posted another undefeated weekend at the top doubles spot to lead the Cavaliers’ 2-0 showing over Miami and Florida State. The duo swept the No. 29 ranked Isabella Pfennig and Xinyi Nong of Miami, 6-0, before securing the doubles point with a 7-5 win over Florida State’s No. 30 pairing of Vic Allen and Millie Bissett. Chervinsky and Collard are now ranked No. 8 in the nation in the latest ITA rankings.

Kimchi went 4-0 in Duke’s split weekend, recording a straight set win over Louisville’s Lilian Mould, 6-1, 6-2, before securing a tiebreaker over Notre Dame’s Page Freeman, 6-4, 7-6 (8-6). At No. 2 doubles, Kimchi teamed up with Emma Jackson to only drop two games on their way to a pair of 6-1 victories over Louisville’s Jamilah Snells/Berta Miret and Notre Dame’s Carrie Beckman and Akari Matsuno.

Seven ACC teams are ranked in the top 25 of the ITA team rankings, led by Virginia jumping back into the No. 4 spot and one place ahead of North Carolina at No. 5. They are followed by No. 13 NC State, No. 20 Miami, No. 22 Georgia Tech, No. 23 Florida State and No. 24 Duke. The ACC’s seven teams in the top 25 are the most of any conference.
