ROME, Ga. (theACC.com) – Duke and Virginia each earned dramatic wins Saturday afternoon during a tremendous semifinal round of action at the 2022 Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Tennis Championship at the Rome Tennis Center at Berry College in Rome, Georgia.

 

The No. 4 seed and ranked No. 7 nationally, the Cavaliers ousted top-seeded and top-ranked North Carolina, 4-2, to snap an eight-match losing streak to the Tar Heels and pick up their first win over UNC since 2016. No. 2 seed and No. 5-ranked Duke staged a big comeback at No. 4 singles in the final match of the day to defeat No. 3 seed and 13th-ranked Miami, 4-3.

 

The championship match is slated for 2 p.m. Sunday and also will be broadcast live on ACC Network Extra. Duke is aiming for its first ACC Championship since 2012, while Virginia is looking to win its first ACC title since 2015.

 

Virginia took the doubles point with wins from Emma Navarro/Hibah Shaikh at No. 1 and Elaine Chervinsky/Amber O’Dell at No. 2. The top-ranked singles player in the nation, Navarro rolled past fourth-ranked Cameron Morra, 6-1, 6-0, for UVa’s first singles win. Sara Ziodata won at No. 6 singles and Natasha Subhash clinched the match with her three-set win at No. 2.

 

Duke claimed the doubles point with victories from Chloe Beck/Ellie Coleman at No. 2 and Eliza Omirou/Margaryta Bilokin at No. 3. Both teams snagged three wins in the singles, but Duke’s Kelly Chen scored the deciding result at No. 4 singles, rallying from a 4-1 deficit in the third set and winning 8-6 in the tiebreaker. Georgia Drummy (No. 2) and Ellie Coleman (No. 6) also won for the Blue Devils.

 

One-day entry passes are $10 for adults and $7 for children (age 9-17) and non-ACC college students. Children (8 and under) and ACC college students (with valid ID) are admitted free of charge.
