Duke Receives Three ITA Carolina Region Awards

DURHAM – Duke was well represented in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Carolina Region awards with a trio of winners, the organization announced Tuesday.

Every year the ITA recognizes coaches and players for their excellence on the court and in their communities throughout the season. Andrew Dale was named the Arthur Ashe Leadership & Sportsmanship recipient, Pedro Rodenas was voted the Rookie of the Year, and Maciek Sykut received the Assistant Coach of the Year honor.

Dale, a produce of Leesburg, Va., was honored as the student-athlete who has exhibited outstanding sportsmanship and leadership, as well as scholastic, extracurricular and tennis achievements in ways that embody the legacy of tennis icon and humanitarian Arthur Ashe Jr. Dale is respected on the court, in the classroom and around the community. Off the court, Andrew is a two-time Academic All-ACC recipient and holds a 3.693 cumulative GPA while pursuing a pre-med and pre-MD/Ph.D. track at Duke and working toward a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry and a minor in Spanish. He represents Duke tennis on the Duke Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, was selected as the team’s time-management representative, participates in the team’s philanthropic initiatives, and serves as a host for recruits and their families while they are on campus.

On the court, he’s compiled three consecutive seasons with double-digit singles wins, including a career-best 19-11 mark this past year. In 2023, he was one of five players with double-digit dual victories, sitting second on the team with 15. Dale was a perfect 2-0 on court four and 13-2 on court five during the dual season and was second on the team in match-clinching wins with five. His lone victory over a nationally ranked opponent came on Feb. 12, 2023, when he defeated No. 57 Charlelie Cosnet of Kentucky in super tiebreak fashion 6-2, 1-6, 1-0 (10-8).
