CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – Duke’s Garrett Johns was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week for the third time this season, while he and his teammate Pedro Rodenas earned their second Doubles Team of the Week nod. North Carolina’s Patrick Schoen picked up his first career weekly accolade as the Freshman of the Week.
Johns went 4-0 on the weekend with four ranked wins, playing at the No. 1 position. The Atlanta native defeated Louisville’s No. 45 Etienne Donnet in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, before besting Notre Dame’s No. 29 Sebastian Dominko in a three-set come-from-behind victory, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4. Johns, who clinched Sunday’s victory over the Fighting Irish, is now 13-4 in dual action and 8-3 against nationally ranked opponents. The senior is now ranked No. 21 in the nation after jumping nine spots in the latest ITA rankings, released on Tuesday.
Johns and Rodenas teamed up to register two top-15 wins last weekend, downing ninth-ranked Etienne Donnet and Natan Rodrigues on Friday, 7-5, to clinch the doubles point against Louisville, before handing 13th-ranked Sebastian Dominko and Jean March Malkowski a 6-3 defeat on Sunday against Notre Dame. The then-No. 6 ranked pair has won six straight doubles matches and are 8-2 against nationally ranked opponents. On the season, the duo holds a 14-3 overall record, including a 7-1 mark in ACC play. Johns and Rodenas are now ranked No. 4 in the latest ITA rankings.
This marks the second time this season that Johns has won Player of the Week in the same week he and Rodenas were named the Doubles Team of the Week (March 12 & April 2).
