Duke Heads to UNC for Tom Chewning Invite

DURHAM – Members of the Duke men’s tennis team will travel to Chapel Hill this weekend for the Tom Chewning Invitational, hosted by the University of North Carolina.

The event kicks off Friday and continues through Sunday at the Chewning Tennis Center. There are seven teams competing at the event in Duke, Furman, North Carolina Central, NC State, Wake Forest, VCU and host North Carolina.

Four Blue Devils are set to take part in the three-day tournament – Michael Heller, Faris Khan, Pedro Rodenas and Alexander Visser. Additionally, Heller and Khan will team up for the doubles portion of the tournament.

Rodenas faces Will Peters of North Carolina during his opening round of singles play, while rookie Visser gets his first taste of collegiate tennis when he battles North Carolina’s Peter Murphy in his first contest. To close out the Blue Devils’ opening-round matches, Khan meets up with VCU’s Romain Gales with Heller competing against North Carolina Central’s Hugo Vega.

Heller and Khan also have their first round of doubles on Friday and will battle Peters and Dennis Perumov of North Carolina.

The tournament begins each day at 9 a.m., with competitors playing one round of singles and doubles daily. Results will be available at CourtHive.com and admission is free.
