Duke Claims Two Wins on Opening Day of ITA National Fall Championships


SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Blue Devils earned two wins on the first day of the 2022 ITA National Fall Championships.
 
Senior Garrett Johns started the day with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Pierce Rollins of Texas A&M in the singles tournament. A few minutes later, fellow classmates Michael Heller and Andrew Zhang registered their first doubles win, after besting Younes Lalami and Brandon Perez of Old Dominion 6-2, 7-5.
 
Johns, who is the No. 1 overall seed in the singles tournament, faces Stanford’s Max Basing in the round of 16 on Thursday at 10:15 a.m. PT. In the doubles tournament, Heller and Zhang next compete against No. 3 seed Alexander Jong and Lui Maxted of TCU on Thursday. Timing for the contest has yet to be determined. All matches will be played at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego, Calif.
