Duke Claims Four Wins on Day Three of ITA All-American Championships

TULSA, Okla. – Duke earned four wins on Monday during the qualifying rounds of the 2022 ITA All-American Championships at the Case Tennis Center in LaFortune Park on Monday.
 
In singles action both freshman Pedro Rodenas and senior Andrew Zhang registered wins, while Rodenas and senior Garrett Johns teamed up in double play for two victories.
 
Playing in his first collegiate match, Rodenas made quick work of the No. 7-ranked freshman Zsombor Velcz of Baylor 6-1, 6-1. Zhang did much of the same during his match with No. 2 Bradley Frye. The Bloomfield Hills, Mich., native bested Frye 6-2, 6-3.
 
Both advance to the second round of qualifying and will play at 9 a.m. CT at the Case Tennis Center in LaFortune Park on Tuesday. Rodenas will battle Florida State’s Alex Bulte, while Zhang faces off against Melvin Manuel of Arkansas.
 
Playing together for the first time this fall, Johns and Rodenas shined during their opening two matches of doubles play. In their first contest, the duo defeated Alex Kotzen and Michael Zheng of Columbia 7-6 (1), 6-2 before downing Florida’s Axel Nefve and William Grant in three sets during their second match. The pair fell in the opening set 6-4, but rebounded for 6-1, 10-7 victories in the final two frames to advance in the tournament.
 
Johns and Rodenas will next face Louisville’s Fabien Salle and Natan Rodriques on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. CT at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Tulsa for a chance to advance to Wednesday’s main draw.
