LUBBOCK, Texas – Florida sophomore Alicia Dudeney fell to top-seeded Martyna Kubka at the Lubbock 15K on Thursday: 6-3-6-4, to conclude her opening week of fall competition. The Gators will now turn their focus to the Bedford Cup over the weekend.
Dudeney gave it her all against the top seeded Kubka in Lubbock, but the Poland-native opened with a strong start and a 6-3 opening set victory. The Hove, United Kingdom native responded, however, gaining a 3-2 lead in the second set before a back-and-forth affair gave way to Kubka’s 6-4 set and match win.
The Gators now shift their focus to the Bedford Cup over the weekend, slated to take place on the campus of Florida Gulf Coast from Sept. 23-25. Carly Briggs, Emma Shelton and Sophie Williams will get singles action started on Friday beginning at 9 a.m. ET while Emily de Oliveira will follow at 10:30 a.m. ET.
Shelton and Williams will also represent the Orange & Blue in doubles with action slated for 8 a.m. ET on Friday while Briggs and de Oliveira received a bye on their side of the doubles bracket, leaving their opener slated for later in the day on Friday.
The Bedford Cup is a three-day (Sept. 23-25), women’s individuals only event open to Division I schools in Florida. Fifty-two student-athletes from eight different Sunshine State institutions will take part in the event.
The tournament format includes two 32-player singles draws and two 16-team doubles draws.
Singles main draw matches will be two out of three sets with no advantages. In singles consolation matches, two out of three with a 10-point tiebreak in lieu of a third set.
For doubles, matches will be a one six-game set and no advantage. The doubles finals will be a one eight-game pro set in format. Matches are scheduled to start at 8 a.m. daily.
