EUGENE, Ore. – The Oregon women’s tennis team is prepped for its next fall tournament, the SDSU Classic, which begins Friday at the Aztec Tennis Center on the campus of San Diego State.
The three-day event gets underway at 9 a.m. PT and will feature six singles brackets and three doubles brackets, each with eight players (teams) in a double-elimination style format. Head coach Courtney Nagle will be sending six Ducks to the event in Jo-Yee Chan, Nina Geissler, Tilde Jagare, Sophie Luescher, Uxia Martinez Moral and Karin Young.
Oregon has posted a combined 17-9 singles record while going 12-5 in doubles in its two previous fall tournaments, including the ITA Northwest Regionals from Oct. 13-17. Luescher and Martinez Moral, ranked as the nation’s No. 56 doubles tandem, and the duo of Candela Aparisi and Karin Young each made runs to the quarterfinal round of the event.
Luescher and Martinez Moral are off to a 4-1 start to the fall campaign and will be paired together in the Red Doubles bracket. Chan and Geissler, who have a 1-1 record this fall, will also be in the Red Doubles bracket, while Jagare and Young will be in the Black Doubles bracket.
On the singles side, Luescher and Martinez Moral each drew the Red Singles bracket. Martinez Moral will begin her singles match at 10 a.m. against San Diego State’s Gloria Alogo while Luescher will take on Betina Tokac of Colorado at 11:30 a.m.
In the Black Singles bracket, Chan and Geissler will each take on players from Nevada in Lou Anne Guebert and Marlene Foerster, respectively. Jagare will match up against Kelly Leung from UC San Diego in the White Singles bracket along with Young, who will face Colorado’s Carrington Hayes.
Luescher owns a team-best 6-1 singles record this fall, while Young has won three of her four singles matches.
