EUGENE, Ore. – The Oregon women’s tennis team opened its 2024 spring season Friday with a 7-0 sweep over Portland State at the Student Tennis Center.
The Ducks won their season opener for the third straight season, and sixth time in the last seven years, while improving their all-time record against the Vikings to 27-0. UO won two of three doubles matches and all six singles matches, with four coming in straight sets.
“We have a lot of new players. They have adjusted very well, and everyone fits well on the team,” said head coach Courtney Nagle. “We have great chemistry and are excited to keep building with that.”
Oregon clinched the doubles point in a tiebreak at third doubles, with Olivia Symons and Karin Young outlasting PSU’s Scarlett Perkins and Elizabeth Strongina, 7-6 (1). The Ducks’ top pair of Sophie Luescher and Uxia Martinez Moral eased by Capu Sanoner and Nika Beukers, 6-0.
The Vikings earned a spilt of the first two doubles matches with Makoto Ohara and Momoko Yoshimura’s 6-4 win over Jo-Yee Chan and Nina Geissler at No. 2 doubles.
Including the fall season, Luescher and Martinez Moral pushed their doubles record to 6-3 while Symons and Young played together for the first time.
