Ducks Fall to No. 1 UNC at ITA Kickoff

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Oregon women’s tennis team took on the defending national champions and No. 1-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels Friday, but fell 4-0 on the first day of the ITA Kickoff at Con-Kenfield Tennis Center.
 
The Ducks faced a UNC lineup that featured all three doubles teams ranked in the top 25 to go with five of six singles players being ranked in the top 45.
 
Sophie Luescher and Uxia Martinez Moral, UO’s No. 1 doubles tandem, met the nation’s top-ranked doubles team of Reese Brantmeier and Elizabeth Scotty, with the Tar Heels’ pair came away with a 6-0 win.
 
Candela Aparisi and Karin Young faced No. 11 Abbey Forbes and Reilly Tran at third doubles, but UNC earned a 6-2 win that sealed the doubles point. Playing at No. 2 doubles, Jo-Yee Chan and Nina Geissler evened the score of their match against 23rd-ranked Fiona Crawley and Carson Tanguilig at 2-2 before the match went unfinished (2-5).
 
The Tar Heels claimed three straight-set victories, winning on Courts 3, 4 and 5 to earn the 4-0 victory.
 
Martinez Moral dropped a 6-2, 6-1 decision to Scotty, ranked No. 44, and Olivia Symons was defeated by No. 9 Anika Yarlagadda by the same score. Chan faced No. 31 Forbes, falling 6-1, 6-4.
 
Luescher, playing at the top singles position, got four games off the nation’s fifth-ranked player in Brantmeier, but went unfinished (4-6, 1-4). Geissler…
