FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Bedford Cup concluded with a pair of trophies for Florida women’s tennis, as Emily de Oliveira and Emma Shelton completed a perfect weekend of competition on Sunday afternoon.
It was an early morning for the Gators, as first serve was slated for 8 a.m. ET for both de Oliveira and Shelton. Shelton, in her semifinal match, faced-off with Emma Bardet of Florida Gulf Coast and it was a battle. In a back-and-forth first set, the athletes fought to a deciding tiebreaker at 6-6. Shelton was able to gain control for the 7-4 tiebreak and opening frame victory.
The second set was more of the same, but the senior managed to put together back-to-back wins for the 7-5 set and match clincher. Jordana Ossa awaited Shelton in the finals for the Green bracket, but the afternoon was all Shelton. The Gainesville native sprinted out to a 6-0 first set win before claiming the title behind a 6-4 effort in the second set.
In the Blue bracket, de Oliveira was slated for the early morning title match against Magdalena Hedzrak of Stetson. The sophomore put together nearly flawless consecutive sets to walk away the Blue draw singles champion, defeating her opponent: 6-1, 6-1.
The Gators will now turn their focus to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-American Championships, slated to begin on Saturday, Oct. 1 with pre-qualifying.
