SEATTLE – The women’s tennis team battled through every single match Wednesday afternoon to defeat San Diego 4-3 at the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
The Huskies improve to 13-6 on the season and 10-3 at home.
The first win of the afternoon went to the Dawgs, who clinched the doubles point with first a 6-3 victory on court 2 – marking Dariya Detkovskaya and Erika Matsuda’s third win in four matches as a doubles pair.
Astrid Olsen and Alexia Jacobs also dominated in a 6-3 win to clinch the doubles point, stranding Catherine Gagnon and Melissa Sakar at a 5-3 clip.
The Huskies battled from start to finish, digging themselves into an early hole in singles after dropping matches on courts 5 and 6.
96th-ranked Jacobs finished her match next with back-to-back 7-5 sets to tie the match at 2 all. The freshman improved to 12-2 in the No. 2 doubles spot and 13-2 overall.
The final three singles all came down to a third set. Sakar, after dropping her second set 0-6 and San Diego’s Jordyn McBride forcing a third, grinded out a 6-3 win to give the Dawgs a one-point advantage.
Matsuda stole one set from No. 56 Claudia De Las Heras, but it wasn’t enough as the sophomore fell in three sets and forced the pressure to Olsen on court 3.
Olsen fell 3-6 in the first set to the Toreros’ 47th-ranked Mack before forcing a third with a 6-2 second set victory. Olsen got off to an early lead in the third, going up 5-2. She kept everyone on their toes as she battled through but dropped two straight games to narrow her lead, 5-4.
San Diego’s last-minute momentum in the final set wasn’t enough. The final point went to the Dawgs.
“We came out and competed for every single point,” Olsen said. “We knew it was going to be a battle, but we were all locked in to find a way to win, no matter what it took.”
The Husky hit the road tomorrow morning for a Friday afternoon matchup with the Oregon Ducks.
