Dawgs Drop Tight One In Tempe

TEMPE, Ariz. – Cesar Bouchelaghem moved to 17-0 on the season and Nedim Suko earned a three set win, but Washington’s rally from a 0-3 deficit at Arizona State came up just short, with the Sun Devils completing a 4-2 win. Washington’s Jim Hendrikx led on the remaining court at the Whiteman Tennis Center when ASU clinched.

The Huskies dropped the doubles point and Arizona State added straight set singles wins at No. 1 and No. 6 before UW began to tighten things up in the middle of the singles lineup. Bouchelaghem won his 22nd-straight match going back to the fall, defeating Jacob Bullard, 7-6, 6-3, at No. 3 singles, to start the rally.

Dzinis Zharyn lost his first sets at No. 2 singles, but won his second set to force a decisive third. Suko also split his first two sets and was early in a third at No. 4 singles. Meanwhile, Jim Hendrikx was up a set and even late in his second set at No. 5 singles. Washington would need all three to get their second Pac-12 win.

Suko was down early in his third set to Constantinos Koshis, but rallied back in front, 5-3, and won when his opponent was penalized for a dispute. That made it 3-2, ASU.

Zharyn had an early 3-1 lead in the third against Max McKennon, but the Sun Devil broke back and took the lead. McKennon held for 5-4, and then broke in the next game to clinch the match.

Hendrikx had taken his first set in a tiebreak over Roi Ginat, and was at 5-5 in the second set when the match was suspended.

The Huskies will face a big challenge on Sunday as they visit 12th-ranked Arizona for a 12 noon match.
