Danielle Collins’ US Open Singles Career Ends In Defeat to Dolehide

The Grand Slam career of Danielle Collins has come to an end, but her career lives on.

After falling to compatriot Caroline Dolehide on Louis Armstrong Stadium, the 30-year-old told reporters that she plans to finish the season – if her body allows it.

“I’m still playing the rest of the year, or at least that’s the plan right now,” she said after falling to Dolehide, 1-6, 7-5, 6-4. “You never know with life’s challenges and, you know, health stuff. We’ll see. But yeah, I was kind of just bummed I couldn’t play some of my best tennis. I was all over the place with my shots. I feel like my timing was a bit off, and stamina and this and that.”

Collins drops to 7-9 at the US Open lifetim. She never made it beyond the round of 16, which she did in 2022.

Collins said she wasn’t feeling very fresh as she entered the draw in Flushing Meadows. It showed down the stretch as she squandered a set lead and made 41 unforced errors across the final two sets (49 overall, against 48 winners).

“No one out here is immune to having bad days,” she said. “I’ve physically really been through it, you know, since the Olympics, so it’s been a struggle.”

Collins did not have a post-match ceremony, because she asked the tournament to allow her to do something in private. She’s also still in the doubles draw, but don’t expect a presentation after that, either.

“I’m still in the doubles, and I had requested not to have any presentation on the court,” she said. “I’m not somebody that likes to celebrate my accomplishments. “I’ve struggled with feeling guilt, around success, and that’s something I have had to work on. So I’m not great, honestly, at having an all-about-me moment. I just would prefer to do something like that maybe in private.

“But I feel like I’ve gotten enough attention to last a lifetime.”
