Crawley, Seggerman Win Title At Master’U Championships

At the 2022 Master’U BNP Paribas Championships, it is once again Team USA coming out champions as the Americans take down Great Britain in the championship match to secure their ninth first-place finish over the past 10 tournaments. Fiona Crawley and Ryan Seggerman of the University of North Carolina were part of the winning U.S. team.

After fighting off a strong push from the French team in the semifinals, the United States had to rise to the occasion once again against Great Britain, relying on some heroics in doubles play to clinch the third-straight championship for the Americans.

Making one lineup change in singles from the first two days of play, Team USA earned two singles victories from the No. 2 positions on both the men’s and women’s sides of play to head into doubles play tied at two with the Brits.

In women’s singles, Connie Ma (Stanford) continued her dominance at this tournament, earning her third singles victory with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Nadia Rawson. From the No. 1 position, Crawley fell for just the first time this fall, dropping her match 6-3, 4-6, 5-10 to former Old Dominion standout Holly Hutchinson.

For the men, Patrick Maloney (Michigan) made the most of his first appearance in the singles lineup, winning 7-6, 5-7, 10-8 over Giles Hussey (Tennessee). In what was a battle between two of the top collegiate players over the past two seasons, Great Britain’s Charlie Broom (Baylor) was able to get the best of Stefan Dostanic (USC) to level the match after singles play.

Utilizing strong doubles play to clinch the match against France in the semifinal, the Americans were once again left hoping for some strong doubles play in today’s championship and that is exactly what they got.

It was Crawley and Haley Giavara (Cal) teaming up for what was arguably the best match of the tournament, outdueling Emily Arbuthnott (Stanford) and Hutchinson 6-3, 2-6, 17-15 to swing momentum in favor of the United States as the men’s doubles match could now secure the championship for Team USA.

For the second day in a row, it was Dostanic and Seggerman providing the clinch, as the duo was able to hold off Broom and Ben Jones to lift the title for both team and country.
