FLUSHING, N.Y. – After her day off was taken away due to a weather-delayed second round matchup, Fiona Crawley put forth a dominant third round effort on short rest to secure a spot in the 2023 US Open Women’s Main Draw Singles tournament on Saturday.
Crawley defeated 13th seed Kimberly Birrell of Australia 6-3, 6-3 and now awaits the results of the rest of Saturday’s matches before her next opponent is revealed.
Entering the day, Crawley was one of five collegiate tennis players to make it to the third round. After her win, she is one of two collegians to cement their place in the US Open Main Draw tournament.
The US Open Main Draw tournament begins on Monday with the doubles tournament set to begin on Wednesday.
On top of the US Open Singles tournament, Crawley will play in the US Open Doubles tournament with fellow Tar Heel Carson Tanguilig. The duo won the 2023 NCAA Doubles tournament this past May and received a wildcard bid to the tournament.
