Cougars Sweep Broncos 7-0 – Washington State University Athletics

BOISE, Idaho – Washington State Tennis swept all six singles matches in straight sets en route to a 7-0 victory over Boise State Saturday at the Boas Indoor Tennis Center. With the win, the Cougars improve to 4-0 on the season while Boise State falls to 1-1.
 
Doubles opened the day and the Cougars swept all three matches to capture the opening point. At No. 2, WSU’s Yura Nakagawa and Fifa Kumhom rode an early service break to a 6-4 victory over Pauline Ernstberger and Shauna Heffernan. The No. 1 match saw the Cougar duo of Eva Alvarez Sande and Elyse Tse lead from start to finish in a 6-4 win over Nicole Discenza and Lorelyz Marruffo, clinching the doubles point. At No. 3, WSU’s Hania Abouelsaad and Martina Markov captured a late break of serve to secure a 7-5 win over Ryan Kershner and Bhakti Shah.
 
In singles play, the Cougars wasted no time extending its lead. Kumhom posted a 6-0, 6-0 win over Ari Briones Ginesta at No. 3 while Tse had no trouble en route to a 6-3, 6-1 win over Discenza at No. 4, pushing the lead to 3-0. The clinching victory came at No. 6 where Markov posted a straight-set win over Ella Prion, 6-4, 6-3.
 
Nakagawa followed with a 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 2 over Marruffo while Alvarez Sande completed a 6-3, 6-2 win over Ernstberger. The final match of the afternoon saw Abouelsaad defeat Shah, 6-3, 6-3.
 
The Cougars are next in action Saturday when they face Baylor in Seattle. Match time is set for 11 a.m.
