Cougars Open Weekend With Pair of Strong Showings


PULLMAN, Wash. – The Washington State Women’s Tennis team posted solid showings at both the WSU Hidden Duals and Milwaukee Tennis Classic Friday.
 
MILWAUKEE TENNIS CLASSIC
Washington State had a strong first day at the 2024 Milwaukee Tennis Classic, winning four of five matches overall at the at the Nicolet Tennis Center in Glendale, Wisc.
 
Junior Eva Alvarez Sande posted a pair of victories in the singles draw to advance to the quarterfinal round. In her opening match, Alvarez Sande had little trouble with Mississippi’s Emma Kette, winning 6-2, 6-4. In her second round, after a tight first set, the Cougar junior pulled away, defeating Wisconsin’s Maya Bordereau 7-5, 6-1. Alvarez Sande will face Tennessee’s Vanesa Saurez in Saturday’s quarterfinal round.
 
Redshirt-junior Maxine Murphy never found a rhythm in her opening-round match, falling to Oklahoma’s Gloriana Nahum, 6-2, 6-3. Murphy rebounded in her consolation match, posting a dominating 6-0, 6-1 win over Lipscomb’s Mariia Dolzhenko. Murphy will face Mississippi’s Lucie Petruzelova in a Saturday consolation match.
 
In doubles action, WSU’s duo of Alvarez Sande and Murphy posted a 6-3 win over Wisconsin’s Ellison Reynoldson and Maya Brodereau, in the first round. In Saturday’s quarterfinal round, the duo will face Purdue’s Fatima Gutierrez and Ida Clement.
 
 
WSU HIDDEN DUALS
The Cougars hosted their lone event of the fall season and started off by capturing five of six singles matches against the University of Portland. Freshmen Chisato Kanemaki, Martina Puvill and Madhu Satishbabu each recorded straight-set singles wins in their collegiate debuts.
 
In doubles action, the Cougars captured two of three doubles matches against Idaho while they went 1-2 against Montana.
 
Play continues Saturday at the WSU Outdoor Tennis Courts as the Cougars will face Portland in doubles and Montana in singles. Play begins at Noon for WSU.
