SPOKANE, Wash. (Sept. 23, 2022) – The Washington State University tennis team opened its 2022 fall season in strong fashion, taking five of six singles matches during the first day of play at the Gonzaga Invitational Friday at the Stevens Center.
The Gonzaga Invitational is played in a hidden dual format, where six singles matches are contested against one school and three doubles matches against another. The Cougars first day say them face New Mexico in singles and the University of Portland in doubles.
In singles action, WSU captured five of six matches as freshmen Yura Nakagawa and Eva Alvarez Sande each won in straight sets in the collegiate debuts. Sophomore Elyse Tse and junior Fifa Kumhom also posted straight-set wins while sophomore Stefaniia Mikhailova needed three sets to earn her first singles win as a Cougar. Sophomore Maxine Murphy nearly pulled off the three-set comeback before falling in a third-set tiebreaker.
In doubles action, fifth-year senior Yang Lee and Alvarez Sande posted a 6-4 victory while Murphy and Nakagawa, along with Kumhom and Tse both lost 6-4 decisions.
Play continues at the Gonzaga Invitational Saturday with Washington State facing Portland in singles and Gonzaga in doubles.
