THIS WEEK: The Washington State Tennis team returns to the courts this weekend to compete in the 2023 Gonzaga Fall Invitational, Oct. 27-29 hosted by Gonzaga University. All matches will be held at the Stevens Tennis Center on the Gonzaga campus.
2023 GONZAGA FALL INVITATIONAL: The 2023 Gonzaga Fall Invitational consists of three singles draw and two doubles draws. Playing in the Gold Singles Draw for WSU will be Eva Alvarez Sande and Yura Nakagawa while Elyse Tse and Fifa Kumhom will participate in the Blue Singles draw. Hania Abouelsaad and Martina Markov will play in the Red Draw with Tiffany Phout competing in the White Draw.
In doubles play, Alvarez Sande and Tse, along with Nakagawa and Kumhom will participate in the Gold bracket with Abouelsaad and Markov in the Blue draw. Phout will team with Montana State’s Abigail Ritters, also in the Blue draw.
There are eight teams competing in the tournament. Along with WSU and host Gonzaga, Eastern Washington, Idaho, Montana State, Portland, Portland State and Seattle U will also be playing.
ROSTER BREAKDOWN: For the 2023-24 season the Cougars will have one new player to accompany the eight returners. The returning roster consists of senior Fifa Kumhom, redshirt-junior Hania Abouelsaad, juniors Stefaniia Mikhailova, Maxine Murphy and Elyse Tse, along with sophomores Eva Alvarez Sande, Yura Nakagawa and Tiffany Phout. Freshman Martina Markova joins the Cougar lineup this season.

STRONG SUMMER FOR COUGAR TENNIS: Cougar Tennis players made an impression on the ITF circuit over the summer as Eva Alvarez Sande, Elyse Tse, Fifa Kumhom and Hania Abouelsaad all played tour events. Elyse Tse reached a career-best ranking of 1,024 as she was 7-4 over the summer, reaching the quarterfinals of the W15 Caloundra event in Australia. Playing mainly in Spain and Portugal, Eva Alvarez Sande reached the main draw in four summer ITF tournaments while Fifa Kumhom found success on the doubles court, reaching the semifinals of one event and the finals of the W15 Nakhon Si Thammarat tournament in Thailand.
