Cougars End Run at ITA NW Regional Championships


BERKELEY, Calif. (Oct. 14, 2024) – Washington State’s run at the 2024 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northwest Region Championships came to an end Monday morning as all three doubles teams fell in their quarterfinal matches at the Hellman Tennis Complex.
 
The Cougar duo of Eva Alvarez Sande and Maxine Murphy, seeded No. 7, battled early, taking a 2-1 lead before Stanford’s Valencia Xu and Alexis Blokhina, seeded No. 4, earned back-to-back breaks of serve en route to an 8-3 victory.
 
WSU’s Elyse Tse and Chisato Kanemaki, seeded No. 9, ran into the No. 2 seeded pair of Sophie Luescher and Erika Matsuda of Washington, falling 8-2. WSU’s third team to reach the quarterfinals, Hania Abouelsaad and Martina Markov, had few answers for Stanford’s Connie Ma and Valeria Glozman, seeded No. 3, as the Cardinal pair completed an 8-0 victory to advance to the semifinals.
 
WSU is next in action Nov. 1-3 at the Oregon Duck Invitational in Eugene, Ore.
