Cougars Continue Road Swing Against Fresno State and Cal Poly


THIS WEEK: The Washington State Tennis team continues its stretch away from Pullman as it heads to Fresno, California to face Fresno State and Cal Poly this weekend. The match against Fresno State will be held Friday, Feb. 10 at 1 p.m. at the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center. Live scoring of the match is available HERE. The Cougars will face Cal Poly Saturday at Noon in Fresno.
 
SCOUTING FRESNO STATE: Fresno State enters the week with a 2-4 record this season, coming off a 4-2 win over No. 66 Florida Atlantic last weekend in Tucson, Ariz. The Bulldogs other win came in its season-opener against Sacramento State. WSU is 5-13 all-time against Fresno State, including winning the past two meetings (2017, 2019).
 
SCOUTING CAL POLY: The Mustangs enter the week with a 1-1 record this season, beating Grand Canyon 4-1 to open their season before falling 6-1 to Arizona. WSU holds a 2-1 advantage in the all-time series, though the two teams have not played since the 2008 season, a 4-2 Mustangs victory in San Luis Obispo.
 
LAST WEEK: WSU dropped a 5-2 decision at BYU, with WSU capturing singles wins from Eva Alvarez Sande (No. 2) and Fifa Kumhom (No. 5).
 
NEXT UP: Washington State concludes its seven-match road stretch when it travels to Lincoln, Neb., Feb. 17-18, where it will face Big 10 foes Nebraska and Minnesota.
 
MURPHY CRACKS SINGLES RANKINGS: Sophomore Maxine Murphy is ranked No. 111 in the most recent ITA Singles rankings, which were released Feb. 8. This marks the first time in her young career that Murphy has achieved a national ranking.
 
ROSTER BREAKDOWN: For the 2022-23 season the Cougars will have three new players to accompany the six returners. The returning roster consists of fifth-year senior Yang Lee, junior Fifa Kumhom and sophomores Hania Abouelsaad, Stefaniia Mikhailova, Maxine Murphy and Elyse Tse. Joining the Cougar tennis program this year are freshmen Eva Alvarez Sande, Yura Nakagawa and Tiffany Phout.
 
COACH RAQUEL ATAWO: Raquel Atawo is in her second season as head coach of the Cougars after being named to the position July 2, 2021. In Atawo’s first year leading Washington State Tennis, the Cougars showed great improvement throughout the season, finishing with a, 8-15 record, but posted back-to-back wins late in the season over nationally-ranked Washington.
