TUCSON, Ariz. – Arizona native Cole Stelse will join the Men’s Tennis team in fall 2023. Stelse has a UTR career high ranking of 12.25, and in 2021 he was rated No. 5 in the nation in his class, per tennisrecruiting.net.
Stelse is a senior at Desert Mountain High School and is following in the footsteps of his older sister Hailey who plays D1 tennis at the United States Air Force Academy.
“I committed to UofA to be part of an amazing team culture that succeeds and supports one another. The humility and positivity shown by the coaching staff is unlike anywhere else,” Stelse said. “I have grown up watching Arizona Athletics and I’m extremely excited to be a part of the Wildcat family. Bear down!”
Stelse joins next fall’s squad alongside Canada native Sasha Rozin who was also recruited by head coach Clancy Shields.
Shields said of Stelse’s signing: “We are so incredibly excited to announce Cole’s commitment to our Wildcat family and look forward to welcoming one of the best players to ever come out of the state of Arizona to our program. He is a terrific player, an elite student, and a great kid. I know that our program just got a lot better with this addition, both on and off the court!”
“The funny thing about Cole’s recruitment is that I heard him hit the ball long before I ever saw him play. I remember watching on a separate bank of courts and thinking, I have got to go watch whoever is hitting on that court. Well that player crushing the ball was Cole,” said Shields. “He hits as clean a ball as any player I’ve seen and his timing and attacking nature will serve him well at the next level.”
