LAS VEGAS – The Colorado women’s tennis program saw Mila Stanojevic and Elys Ventura take down the 2-seed in the doubles tournament to advance to the semifinals at the ITA Mountain Regional Championships.
Two CU teams competed against ranked pairs in the round of 16 doubles here today.
Sixth-ranked Britt Pursell and Taylor Melville of DU defeated Ellen Puzak and Betina Tokac with a score of 8-3. Later on, 13-seed Mila Stanojevic and Elys Ventura won a very close match against the eighth-ranked duo out of Utah, Kaila Barksdale and Marcela Lopez. The Buffs moved on to the semifinals after narrowly defeating the Utes 8-7.
Tomorrow, Stanojevic and Ventura will face off against Katherine Jhang and Leonie Hoppe of New Mexico at a chance to play the winner of the seven-seed out of BYU, Yujia Huang and Emilee Astle and the three-seed out of Utah, Anastasia Goncharova and Madison Tattini.
After being the only remaining Colorado player in the Flight A singles tournament, Antonia Balzert lost in a tough 6-4, 6-0 match to Pursell of DU.
In five added matches in singles competition, CU went 4-1. Tokac won in a wild 6-1, 4-6, 10-8 match and will play Tina Li of BYU in the next round. Ventura moved onto the next round as well and will match up against Boise State’s, Pauline Ernstberger tomorrow.
Nelson looks to Maud Vandeputte of New Mexico after winning with a score of 6-0, 7-5 today. The last Buff to win in added matches was Stanojevic who beat Utah Tech’s, Rachel Mellor. El Sayed lost a three-set battle to Denver’s Caroline Driscoll 3-6, 6-4, 10-3 to close out the day.
Colorado turns its attention to the doubles tournament semifinals tomorrow at the ITA Mountain Regional Championships.
