Coleman, Berankova to Compete in Dow Tennis Classic

DURHAM – Duke women’s tennis sophomore Ellie Coleman will head home this weekend to compete in the Dow Tennis Classic, which will be held at the Greater Midland Tennis Center Oct. 30 through Nov. 6 in Midland, Mich.

A native of Midland, Mich., Coleman will compete in singles qualifying and the main draw of doubles along with Duke teammate Karolina Berankova.  Coleman was granted a wild card into this year’s tournament.

“I think it’s an amazing opportunity,” said Coleman.  “I’m so grateful to all the directors in Midland for granting me this experience and opportunity. I’m super excited to go back to the club I grew up playing at.  It’s really a special place to me.  To be able to go back to my home community and maybe give back a little bit of all they’ve done to support me.”

The 2022 event will feature qualifying rounds on Sunday and Monday with the main draw beginning on Tuesday.  Play will continue throughout the week, with the quarterfinals slated for Friday, Nov. 4, the semifinals on Saturday, Nov. 5 and the finals on Sunday, Nov. 6.

“I’m just really excited about the field we have coming. We have (eight) top-100 players coming, which is by far the most we’ve ever had,” said Down Tennis Classic Director Jeff Rekeweg. “We also have two well-known personalities in Sophia Kenin and Eugenie Bouchard who are trying to get back into great shape after coming off of injuries. And then we have Ellie Coleman, who was raised in Midland and went through our competitive tennis program here and who’s now playing at Duke.”

At least eight players who are ranked in the world top-100 will be competing in the 34th annual event.
