CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – Virginia’s Iñaki Montes picked up his second Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week award, while he and his teammate James Hopper were named the Doubles Team of the Week. Clemson’s Wissam Aberrahman earned Freshman of the Week laurels for the first time this season.
Montes picked up two ranked singles wins over the weekend in No. 3 Virginia’s undefeated weekend against Louisville and Notre Dame. The 38th-ranked senior out of Pamplona, Spain, earned two upset wins against No. 33 Etienne Donnet of Louisville (6-3, 6-4) and No. 34 Sebastian Dominko of Notre Dame (6-4, 6-2). Both victories came on Court 1 – just the second and third matches he has played in the top spot for the Cavaliers.
He and Hopper then went undefeated in doubles on Court 1, playing to a 6-3 victory over Louisville before claiming a 6-2 win over Notre Dame’s 11th-ranked tandem of Dominko and Jean-Marc Malkowski.
Aberrahman went 3-0 in singles for Clemson last week in the Tigers’ split weekend. The freshman’s first match of the week against No. 42 Keshav Chopra was in a second set tiebreaker (6-4, 6-6 (7-6)) before the match was abandoned on Court 2. He battled to a straight-set win over Memphis at the second singles spot, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) before moving up to play his final pair of matches on Court 1. The native of Paris, France, claimed a 7-6 (7-3), 6-7, 1-0 (10-4) win over Boston College’s Juan Jose Bianchi in the Tigers’ sweep of the Eagles before a dominant 6-0, 6-1 victory over Charleston.
