CARY, N.C. – Clemson Women’s Tennis concludes its run at the ITA All-American Championships in Cary, N.C. Four Tigers competed; Graduates Annabelle Davis and Sophia Hatton led the charge, and transfer Ria Bhakta and newcomer Amelie Smejkalova additionally competed.
The Tigers competed at a high level, claiming six total wins against some of the nation’s premier competition.
“It was a great experience for our players to participate in one of the best national fall tournaments this past week,” Head Coach Boomer Saia said on the tournament. “We were one of just a few teams with four players participating. We came away with some good wins and some lessons learned. We’re excited about the future here in Tigerland, and I know great things are ahead with our team!”
Day 1:
Annabelle Davis and Sophia Hatton faired well on the day, winning against both opponents on the first day of the competition. Davis defeated Georgia Tech’s Alejandra Cruz. Losing the first set, Davis claimed the match in the last two sets, 6-3, 6-3, and advanced to the round prequalifying round of 64. Hatton easily defeated SMU’s Drew Morris, 6-3, 7-5.
Ria Bhakta and Davis defeated the No. 75 ranked duo of Vivan Ovrootsky and Shachf Lieberman from Texas in doubles. The Clemson duo won the match 6-3, 6-2, and moved on to the round of 16 in the doubles main draw.
Day 2:
Amelie Smejkalova succeeded on her second day of competition. After losing on day one, Smejkalova defeated Danielle Hack from Maryland 7-5, 6-4 in the qualifying consolation round of 64.
In the doubles consolation quarterfinals round of 16, Smejkalova and Hatton defeated McKenna Schaefbaue and Kasia Treiber from Illinois, 6-3, 6-3.
Day 3:
Ria Bhakta took to the main stage and competed in the main draw round of 64 but ultimately fell to Melodie Collard, 6-1, 6-3.
Day4:
On the final day of competition for the Tigers, Ria Bhakta won her consolation round of 32 match, as Gabby Rivera was walked over by injury.
Next up, Amelie Smejkalova will compete in the ITF Redding W35 tournament in Redding, Calif., on Oct. 14-21.
