Clark Inks Alice Xu to National Letter of Intent

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Illinois women’s tennis head coach Evan Clark has announced the signing of Alice Xu to a National Letter of Intent to join the Fighting Illini program. She’ll join the squad beginning with the 2023-24 campaign.

Xu joins the Illini program from her hometown of Vienna, Virginia, and attends Sidwell Friends High School. She’s the daughter of Margaret Wang and Tao Xu and her sister Michelle attends Columbia.

On the court, Xu is rated a 5-start recruit by tennisrecruiting.com and has ranked as high as No. 19 in the country by the outlet. Xu has achieved a top-five USTA national ranking in singles and a top-10 reading in doubles competition. Additionally, she has been the top-ranked player in both Virginia and the Mid-Atlantic for five consecutive years.

Why she chose Illinois: “I chose Illinois because I felt at home with the team and campus, and felt it provided the best opportunity for me to achieve my athletic and academic goals.”

Clark on adding Alice Xu: “We were extremely impressed with Alice since day one. She is an extremely intelligent individual and a gifted tennis player, athlete and competitor. She understands the game very well and the best news is she still has a lot of room to grow and develop her game. With her development she has the potential to have a very special career as an Illini. Alice and the University of Illinois is truly a great fit in all aspects. We could not be more pleased that she has chosen Illinois and can’t wait to get her on campus.”
