Chilton and Gurevich Claim Two Doubles Victories on Day Two of ITA Regionals

NEW YORK — The Rutgers women’s tennis team wrapped up day two of ITA Regionals at Columbia University on Saturday. The Scarlet Knights recorded six total victories, four doubles and two singles.
 
The duo of Tara Chilton and Yana Gurevich led the charge for RU in doubles action, winning two matches to send themselves to Sunday’s quarterfinals.

In singles play, Mai Nguyen and Amira Badawi completed yesterday’s postponed round of 64 competitions. Both earned victories and will continue their regionals run on Sunday.

 

Doubles

 

Naomi Karki and Minchae Kim opened doubles play for RU in the round of 64. The pair matched up against FDU’s Namie Isago and Anastasia Lim, claiming an 8-5 win.

 

Karki and Kim fell in the round of 32 to end their regional run.

 

After receiving byes in the round of 64, the doubles teams of Mai Nguyen and Amira Badawi, and Tara Chilton and Yana Gurevich, competed in the round of 32 on Saturday.

 

Nguyen and Badawi used an 8-3 victory over Demetria Jhaveri and Franny Shea of Fordham to earn a spot in the round of 16.

 

Chilton and Gurevich followed their lead, defeating Columbia’s Gayathri Krishnan and Salma Farhat, 8-4, to join Nguyen and Badawi in the next round.

 

Chilton and Gurevich took on Leopoldine Boisseau and Saki Oyama of LIU in the round of 16, defeating the Sharks, 8-3. The pair will compete in the doubles quarterfinals tomorrow.

 

Nguyen and Badawi’s doubles run ended in the round of 16.

 

Singles

 

Nguyen and Badawi competed in their round of 64 matches following Friday’s schedule changes. Both Scarlet Knights secured victories to send themselves to the round of 32.

 

Nguyen took on Sabira Mohamed of Hofstra, claiming a 6-1, 6-1 win over her opponent. The sophomore is set to face Temple’s Maiko Uchijima on Sunday.

 

Badawi kept the wins coming for RU, defeating LIU’s Clara Tardivel, 6-2, 6-1. She will face off against Saige Roshkoff of Penn in the next round.
