SEATTLE – The stage is set for the 2022 NCAA Men’s Tennis Singles Championships, hosted by Illinois in Champaign-Urbana, and featuring Husky junior Clement Chidekh. The first round goes tomorrow, Monday, May 23, with Chidekh set to face Jeffrey von der Schulenburg of Virginia.
Chidekh is the first Husky to compete in the 64-player NCAA singles draw since Jake Douglas in 2018. His first round match is scheduled to go at 3:30 p.m. Pacific time at the Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex. TennisOne will provide live match coverage on its app.
Ranked eighth in the NCAA, Chidekh was seeded as one of eight 9-16 seeds. He has a 28-4 record on the season and was named All-Pac-12 First Team for the second straight season.
The tournament schedule will be one round per day until the finals on May 28.
Von der Schulenburg has helped his Cavaliers squad reach the NCAA Team Championship final, taking place on Sunday, so Chidekh will certainly have the rest advantage on Monday, but von der Schulenburg will have the edge in terms of being sharp and battle-tested. He won a big match at No. 3 singles on Saturday to help Virginia defeat Tennessee in the team semifinals. Von der Schulenburg is ranked 45th nationally.
