STANFORD, Calif. – The Oregon men’s tennis doubles team Joshua Charlton and Quinn Vandecasteele won the doubles title today at the ITA Northwest Super Regionals.
The duo entered the fall season as the No. 5 ranked doubles team in the ITA preseason poll and they lived up to the billing this weekend. It took four wins in four days, with action starting on Saturday morning when they defeated Gonzaga’s Roider and Andersson 8-5. After a short break, they were back at it and quickly advanced to the semifinals after an 8-2 win against Dalmasso and Neuhaus of Santa Clara.
The format shifted in the semifinals, but the Ducks swept Watt and Maxant from Saint Mary’s 6-4, 6-1. In the bottom half of the bracket, Mark Keki and Mate Veros of Sacramento State upset the No. 2 seed in the tournament to set up the finals matchup versus Oregon.
Sacramento State’s pair pushed the Ducks to a tiebreak after the two teams split the first two sets. A series of rallies made for a tight match, but Oregon came out on top after a 10-8 tiebreak win.
What it Means: Joshua Charlton has now won the ITA NW Super Regional doubles title three times with three different teammates. He’s taken home the title with Ty Gentry, Thomas Laurent and now Vandecasteele. As a result of the win, the team qualifies for the ITA Fall National Championships taking place in San Diego from Nov. 2-6.
