Carnicella and Hamner Advance to Quarterfinals in Singles at ITA Sectionals – University of South Carolina Athletics

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Both South Carolina women’s tennis players advanced from the round of 16 singles and are set to play in quarterfinals of the ITA Sectional Championship tomorrow.

Kaitlyn Carnicella won her match in two sets against UVA’s Melodie Collard, 6-2 and 6-4. The junior will play Maryland’s Kallista Liu tomorrow at 11:00 a.m.

Sarah Hamner started off her match winning the first set 6-2 against Martina Salas of UVA . The senior got off to a slow start for her second set but was able to rally back from after trailing 2-5 to tie everything up 6-6. Hamner ultimately topped Salas after the tiebreaker set 7-6 (4) to walk away with the win. The second seeded Gamecock plays fifth seeded Emma Jackson of Duke tomorrow at 11:00 a.m.

The two Gamecocks then paired up for doubles action in the qualifying quarterfinals of the consolation bracket, dominating Alana Boyce and Lindsay Zink of UNC in sets of 6-4 and 6-0. The duo is slated to face Sara Ziodato and Margaret Navarro of UVA tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. in the consolation semifinals.
