Carlson, Pratt awarded Big Ten post-graduate scholarships


MADISON, Wis. — Wisconsin seniors Claire Carlson, a member of the lightweight rowing team, and Jared Pratt, a member of the men’s tennis program, have been selected to receive postgraduate scholarships from the Big Ten Conference.

The league announced on Thursday the recipients of its annual awards of $7,500 for student-athletes who plan to continue their education in a graduate-level program. The scholarship recipients are selected primarily on the basis of academic achievements.

A Bloomington, Minnesota, native, Carlson is continuing her education at UW-Madison in the accelerated industrial and systems engineering master’s program with a focus in health systems engineering. She graduated this spring with a degree in industrial engineering.

Carlson excelled in the classroom as a three-time Academic All-Big Ten rower, as well a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar with better than a 3.6 grade-point average. She was also recognized as an Individual Impact Award winner at the Buckinghams for using her platform to be of service to others and representing Badger athletics in the community.

On the water, Carlson raced this spring with a lightweight four at Eastern Sprints and the Lightweight Invitational, as well as the second lightweight eight at the Cardinal Invite. She competed at IRA National Championships, as well as the Head of the Charles during her career.

A fifth-year senior from Charleston, South Carolina, Pratt plans on pursuing a PhD in chemistry with a focus on organic chemistry at Boston College. He earned his degree from UW in chemistry with a certificate in environmental studies.

Pratt won more than 50 matches in both singles and doubles during his career. He’s a two-time second-team All-Big Ten honoree, leading the Badgers at No. 1 singles the last three seasons.

This past season, he defeated two ranked opponents in singles and also recorded the best doubles record of his career at 18-7. Pratt is also a four-time Academic All-Big Ten selection and earned ITA Scholar-Athlete honors.

To be selected for a Big Ten postgraduate scholarship, students must have maintained at least a 3.2 grade-point average, demonstrated leadership qualities, served as an excellent role model and intend to continue their academic work at a graduate degree program.
