Cards Remain Hot at ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships


LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville men’s tennis team continued its impressive run in the second day at the ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championship at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. The Cardinals added 12 more wins on Friday, totaling 23 wins through the first two days of action.
 
“Being used to the courts, our home court advantage has definitely helped us out,” said senior Matthew Fung. “We are just fired up, we all want to win this tournament, both singles and doubles. We are competing for both ourselves and each other.”
 
All four of the Cardinals doubles-teams went undefeated for the second day in a row. Senior David Mizrahi and freshman Will Mayew took home an 8-4 win over Blemont’s Marko Ilic and Tomas Luis. Senior Matthew Fung and senior Sergio Hernandez dominated Belmont’s Ian Cruz and Riccardo Trione 8-1. The senior duo of Etienne Donnet and Alex Wesbrooks edged Indiana’s Jagger Saylor and Luka Vukovic with 8-7 and 7-2 victories. No. 48 sophomore Natan Rodrigues and senior Fabien Salle cruised past Northern Kentucky’s Nick Nienhaus and Santiago Casamayor 8-3.
 
The Cards picked up six singles victories in the round of 64, four of which were straight sets. After dropping a close first set, Rodrigues edged out Gabriel Castillo-Sanchez of UT Chattanooga 6-7(5), 6-1, 6-2. Fung controlled the match against Butler’s Alvaro Huete, winning 6-0, 6-2. No. 111 Hernandez defeated IUPUI’s Alex Jochim 6-1, 6-4. No. 84 Salle didn’t drop a set against Indiana’s Luc Boulier, securing a commanding 6-0, 6-0 victory. Donnet topped Indiana’s Ekansh Kumar 6-0, 6-4.
 
Louisville once again found success in the round of 32 as five Cardinals secured victories to advance to the round of 16 on Saturday. Rodrigues took down Memphis’ Pau Fanlo 6-1, 6-4. Fung secured a pair of 6-3 wins over Belmont’s Alfred Wallin. No. 11 Hernandez edged out Luka Vukovic in three sets, 6-1, 4-6, 6-1. No. 84 Salle cruised a victory over Memphis’ Sam Edgar 6-1, 6-0. Donnet defeated Thomas Brennan of Butler 6-3, 7-6 (3). Freshman Andre Steinbach fell short against Vanderbilt’s Nathan Cox 7-6, 1-6, 6-3
 
In the singles consolation draw, freshman Will Mayew secured two victories on the day. Defeating UR Chattanooga’s Quinten Nevenhoven 6-0, 6-2 and edging out ETSU’s Juan Lombusano 7-6, 6-3 to advance to the round of 16.
