Cardenas Picks Up Singles Win As Tennis Falls Short to No. 50 Maryland

Minnesota

PISCATAWAY, N.J — The Rutgers women’s tennis team (9-6, 0-4 B1G) fell to No. 50 Maryland (13-3, 2-1) on Sunday afternoon in its first home outdoor match, 6-1.

Daira Cardenas picked up the lone point for RU, with a 7-6 (5), 2-6, 1-0 (9) on the last singles court.

Doubles

Rutgers fought back in doubles but ultimately fell, dropping the first point of the match.

Both pairs of Jackeline Lopez/Mai Nguyen and Chloe Brown/Minchae Kim attempted to come back from deficits on courts No. 1 and 3 but couldn’t pullout wins.

Action on the second court was suspended, 4-4.

Singles

The Scarlet Knights continued to play hard in singles but couldn’t capitalize.

Tara Chilton and Nguyen battled, as they pushed their matches to three sets, but fell short.

Cardenas also extended her match to a third set and won the super tiebreak, 11-9, to give RU their first and only point of the match on the sixth court. She is now 6-1 in singles this spring, earning all six wins on the final court.

The Terrapins stayed on top to win all six singles matches and clinch the 6-1 victory.
